Prepare for the fight of your life, because Dragon Ball FighterZ is here, and it is everything I could have ever wanted from a Dragon Ball fighting game. Developed by Arc System Works, the masters of the 2D fighting genre, this game is a stunningly beautiful and intensely competitive love letter to one of the most iconic anime series of all time. The visuals are so faithful to the source material that at times, I feel like I am controlling an episode of the anime myself.
The game is a 3v3 team-based fighter. I select a team of three characters from a massive roster of fan favorites, including Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, and many more from across the Dragon Ball saga. I can swap between my characters on the fly, call them in for assist attacks, and combine their strengths to create devastating combos. This team mechanic adds a huge layer of strategic depth, as I have to consider not just individual character strength, but also how my chosen team synergizes together.
Go Super Saiyan:
- Accessible Yet Deep Combat: Dragon Ball FighterZ has a control scheme that is easy for newcomers to pick up. Simple button combinations allow me to perform flashy auto-combos and spectacular super moves right from the start. However, beneath this accessibility lies a deep and complex fighting system. I can spend hundreds of hours mastering advanced techniques like optimal combo routes, mix-ups, and defensive maneuvers. It’s a perfect balance that welcomes casual fans and rewards dedicated competitors.
- Spectacular, High-Octane Action: The game perfectly captures the speed and explosive energy of the anime. I can use Vanish to instantly teleport behind my opponent, unleash Ki blasts from across the screen, and engage in high-speed aerial combat. The super moves are cinematic masterpieces, recreating iconic moments from the show with breathtaking detail. Landing a fully-animated, planet-destroying attack is an incredible thrill.
- A New Dragon Ball Story: The game features an original story mode that introduces a brand new character, Android 21, designed by series creator Akira Toriyama himself. The story sees me, the player, linked with Goku and his friends as they fight against a mysterious new threat. It’s a fun and engaging adventure that serves as a great tutorial for the game’s mechanics.
I believe Dragon Ball FighterZ is a dream come true for fans of the series and a top-tier fighting game in its own right. Its beautiful visuals, accessible controls, deep combat system, and thrilling action make it an absolute must-play. Whether you’re a long-time Dragon Ball fan or a fighting game enthusiast, I urge you to power up and join the fight.
