I invite you to the world of Rivellon, a land where the divine is dead and the Void is encroaching. In Divinity: Original Sin 2, I am a Sourcerer, a wielder of forbidden magic, captured and sent to the prison island of Fort Joy. But my story is just beginning. This is a game of immense freedom, a classic-style RPG that gives me the tools to solve problems in countless creative ways, both in and out of combat. My goal is to ascend to Divinity, but the path I take is entirely up to me.
The game is a masterclass in player agency. I can create my own character from scratch, choosing from a variety of races, including humans, elves, dwarves, lizards, and the undead. Or, I can choose to play as one of six unique origin characters, each with their own rich backstory, personal quests, and unique interactions with the world. I find that these origin stories add incredible replayability, as seeing the world through a different character’s eyes reveals new narrative paths and possibilities.
The Divine is in the Details:
- Deep, Tactical Turn-Based Combat: The combat is a brilliant, turn-based affair that is as much about strategy as it is about strength. Every action costs Action Points, so I must plan my turns carefully. The real magic, however, lies in the elemental interactions. I can douse my enemies in oil and then set them ablaze with a fire spell. I can create a rainstorm to put out the fire, and then electrify the water to stun everyone standing in it. The number of creative and devastating elemental combinations I can discover is staggering.
- Unparalleled Freedom and Reactivity: The game world is a true sandbox. If a door is locked, I can try to pick the lock, smash it down, find a key, or even teleport past it. I can talk my way out of conflicts, or I can choose to fight everyone I meet. The world and its characters react to who I am and what I do. Playing as an elf, I can eat body parts to gain their memories. Playing as a lizard, I can dig holes without a shovel. The level of detail and reactivity is astonishing.
- Play with Friends: I can play the entire epic campaign solo, or I can team up with up to three friends in cooperative multiplayer. My friends can join or leave my game at any time. We can work together to overcome challenges, or we can pursue our own individual goals, which can sometimes lead to hilarious and unexpected conflicts. The game even features a competitive “Game Master Mode” where I can create my own D&D-style adventures for my friends.
I believe Divinity: Original Sin 2 is one of the greatest RPGs ever made. It offers a level of freedom, depth, and creativity that is rarely seen in modern games. If you are looking for a deep, rewarding, and truly epic adventure, then your journey to Divinity awaits.
